The Legarda Wedding Gift

On the 24th of January, 1925, Don Benito Legarda y Roces (son of the former Commissioner Don Benito Legarda and Doña Filomena Roces) and Doña Trinidad Fernandez de Legarda (former beauty queen of the Philippine Carnival-Exposition) were married.

As a wedding gift, the newly married couple were given a choice between two places where they could start a new life. The couple chose to live in Balic-Balic, Sampaloc where a family summer residence was located. This residence was formerly occupied by an agriculturalist who called the place “Gardens of Nagtajan.” Behind this vast summer residence was the closed cemetery of Sampaloc.

People must have wondered why anyone, most of all a newly-wedded couple, would want to start their new life beside a closed cemetery. For whatever reason, the silence of the cemetery would be broken; the Legarda’s decision would bring life back to sacred high ground of Balic-Balic.
