Azkals Win At Rizal Memorial, Thanks to De La Salle University

The Azkals, the national football team of the Philippines, thrashed Sri Lanka 4-0 in an Asian World Cup qualifying match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on the 3rd of July, 2011. The win moves the Philippine team to the 2nd round of the qualifying round which is a first in the country’s football history. Rizal, a sportsman himself, would have been proud of this achievement.

Prior to the game,  the German coach, Michael Weiss, praised the Rizal Memorial football pitch as being amazing. After the game, Philippine football federation officials praised De La Salle University for giving the football players and the fans a great pitch. Even the TV broadcast commentators could not contain their praise calling the Rizal football pitch worthy of a Premier League game. Indeed, the Azkals found the Rizal pitch perfect for their new brand of attacking play. Congratulations to the Azkals and to De La Salle University Manila for contributing to the team’s success.  De La Salle University’s football players of generations ago would surely have been very proud of this day (see photo below of De La Salle football team circa 1918-1919).
