Manila South High School Class of 1927 – 50th Graduation Anniversary Homecoming: Part 1
How many class reunions could boast of stories as to how their members experienced and survived the American colonial period, the Japanese occupation, the post-war Philippines, and even the Marcos martial law era? The Alumni of Class 1927 of the Manila South High School celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation at the Manila High School Building on Victoria corner Muralla streets in Intramuros last March 20, 1977.
Dr. Gregorio L. Reyes, Class Salutatorian and President, coordinated the homecoming while Vitaliano O. Garcia took care of the program for the whole day. Eleuteria G. Alquinto and Jose A. Carpio ensured that everyone was well fed during merienda and lunch while Agapito Garcia took care of the entertainment. Out of the 127 graduates, only 29 attended the reunion. Based on the attendance list kept by Dr. Gregorio Reyes, 39 of their classmates or 31% of the Class of 1927 were already deceased and around 59 were unaccounted for. In the age before Facebook and other social media, being able to trace and contact 29 fellow graduates fifty years after the event can be considered a minor miracle already.
