Calabash Road Drainage Project To Nowhere?
Calabash Road located in front of the Most Holy Trinity Church main gate is currently undergoing a drainage improvement project worth around 13 million pesos. The drainage system covers about 200 meters from Sobriedad Extension corner Calabash to G. Tuason. If we assume 1 line of drainage pipes then that would be about project cost of 66,000 pesos per meter (or 33,000 pesos for 2 lines). Even assuming that the project costs meets benchmarking standards of similar road projects, one needs to question the wisdom of such a project. Calabash Road is one of the highest points in Sampaloc and thus one of the reasons why the Sampaloc cemetery was built in the location of the Most Holy Trinity Church. Thus, this particular road never gets flooded, if it did, then that would have meant that Manila was under more that 8-10 meters of flood water. All the roads perpendicular to Calabash Road (Ilaw ng Nayon, Santisima Trinidad, Calabasita St.) do not get flooded as well.
