25th Annual Manila Studies Conference: 30-31, August 2016, NCCA, Intramuros.


In time for History Month, the Manila Studies Association (MSA) will convene the 25th Annual Manila Studies Conference on Aug. 30-31 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, General Luna St., Intramuros, Manila.

The conference is cosponsored by the NCCA-Committee on Historical Research and the Philippine National Historical Society, and will present papers on studies highlighting aspects of Manila’s history and culture, as well as studies on national history that interface in Manila’s historical development.

The following are the papers to be presented: “An Interpretation of the Boxer Codex” by Jorge Mojarro; “The Culinary Annotations of Fr. Manuel Blanco, OSA, ‘In Flora de Filipinas,’” Felice Prudente Sta. Maria; “Archives and Archaeology: Digging Deep into the Foundation of La Ignaciana Apostolic Center in Sta. Ana, Manila,” Katherine Ann B. Manalo and Grace Barretto-Tesoro; “Felipe Padilla de Leon Sr. (1912-1992): The Man, the Musician, and His Philosophy,” Renato B. Lucas; “Native Resistance and Collaboration in the Transformation of Post-Conquest 16th-Century Manila,” Danilo M. Gerona; “The Architectural Heritage of Manila Project, 1571-1961,” Erik Akpedonu; “Metamorphosis: Restoring the Metropolitan Theater in the Urban Imagination and Collective Memory,” Gerard Rey Lico; “Architectural Styles of Churches and Ecclesiastical Facilities of the Dominican Order: Santo Domingo Today,” Demetrio C. Alcaraz Jr.; “Selling the Drama: Music and Identity in the Popular Zarzuelas of Severino Reyes circa 1906,” Isidora Miranda; “Himno Nacional: Musical Borrowing in Early 20th-Century Philippines,” Ma. Edelquinn Lueleen Sy-Beltran; “Refuge in the Philippines: The White Russian Refugees in Tubabao Island (1949-1953),” Kinna Mae G. Kwan; and “Pageantry and Identity: Body, Beauty and Technology in Ms. Gay Philippines Five Prettiest,” Ferdinand M. Lopez.

To be launched on Aug. 31 is the “Selected Papers of the 24th Annual Manila Studies Conference De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, Aug. 27-28, 2015,” with Marya Svetlana T. Camacho as issue editor and Bernardita Reyes Churchill as executive editor.
